Walking reduces our environmental footprint

Walking produces no CO2, unless you count the air you breathe out! In fact, walking reduces traffic congestion, noise, air and carbon pollution. When you walk, you're actually lightening your carbon footprint on the planet!

Did you know that:

  • It has been estimated that trips accompanying children to school constitute 17% of all car trips in Melbourne made between 8.30–9.00 am;
  • 40% of trips within the Melbourne metropolitan area are less than two kilometres, but most people drive rather than walk;
  • Melbourne's congestion cost - currently estimated at $3 billion - is projected to be $6.1 billion by 2020, a 103% increase?

Everytime you choose to walk instead of hopping into the car, you're also be helping to reduce traffic congestion, air and noise pollution. So give yourself an extra pat on the back for helping to make our planet a cleaner and happier environment.

Tips to replace car trips

One third of our daily car journeys are less than 3km; 10 per cent are less than 1 km. Replacing short car trips with walking can reduce waistlines, hip pockets and carbon footprints all at once.
With a bit of planning and coordination, you can reduce your environmental footprint by changing your travel patterns:

  • Replace short car trips by walking
  • Try doing a ‘big shop’ less often, and rely on a quick walk to the local shops a couple of times a week for milk, bread and other basics that fill the gaps in between trips to the supermarket. (You might pay a bit more, but you’ll be saving on petrol, for sure!) 
  • Bring a trolley with you when you shop or go to the library
  • Combine walking with catching public transport where possible.  Research shows that people who catch public transport are likely to be a whole lot more active than those who drive
  • Walk, rather than drive to the train station where possible.  Your walking journeys mean you'll get a daily workout to keep you fit and healthy.
